The Play

The love of poet Kalidas and Mallika is not approved by Mallika's mother, Ambika. Kalidas has composed his first long poem Ritusambhar. He wins recognition in the court of Ujjaini and the king has sent for him. Vilom (also interested in Mallika) says that if Kalidas leaves for Ujjaini, he must take Mallika along…
A few years have passed. Kalidas, a great poet now, is passing through his native valley with his queen Priyagumanjari on his way to Kashmir as the ruler. The queen meets Mallika. Kalidas, however, does not visit them. Mallika's mother is not surprised. Vilom is still in pursuance…
Ambika has died. Mallika and Vilom have a child. Just then Kalidas returns. He finds that the life of Mallika is complete without him.

Director's Note

Ashad Ka Ek Din has always been an opportunity to rediscover the multiple layers of grey areas (especially the clouds metaphorically) for many, but for me it was an occasion to express a contemporary elucidation of re-discovery of the reality of love. The presentation of this production often subscribes to travelling beyond realism. I am fortunate that I could add my personal nuances in it.

The Director

Bapi Bose studied at IITA, NSD and NIDA, Sydney. In 1997, he directed NSD Repertory's prestigious mega-multimedia production Dilli Chalo, a Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India presentation, staged twice at the historic Red Fort as a tribute to the nation. Bapi Bose is the Founder & Artistic Director of Circle Theatre Company, New Delhi. Some of his major productions are Morphosis, Aashad Ka Ek Din, Othello, Seventeenth July, Parampurush, Pratham Parth, Ekla Chalo Re, The Last Seven Days of Julius Caesar, Socrates, Sanyasi ki Talwar, Turup ka Patta, Dilli Chalo, Nati Binodini etc.

The Playwright

Mohan Rakesh shot to fame with Aashad Ka Ek Din in 1958, which got him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1959. During his short life span he wrote plays like Lehron Ke Rajhans (1963), Adhe Adhure (1969) along with novels, stories, anthologies, travelogues and translations.

The Group

Formed in 2002, under the leadership of Bapi Bose, Circle Theatre premiered its first production at the 4th Bharat Rang Mahotsav, 2002. All of its productions like Socrates, Julius Caesar Ki Aakhree Saat Din, Ekla Chalo Re, Pratham Parth, Param Purush, Seventeenth July, Aashad Ka Ek Din, Morphosis etc. have excelled within a brief span of time in the country and have been awarded as well.
